Great Camp Stove - camping, camping stoves

I bought this stove/grill on sale at a Target store to replace my old liquid fuel stove in time for camping season this past summer. It came with the instastart ignition although it doesn't say so in the Amazon product description. The product picture shows the little red igniter button near the center of the stove front. The grill is an excellent design option allowing for grilling steaks, hot dogs, burgers, sausages, etc., which I do frequently now. The Instastart ignition has worked flawlessly so far.

Propane bottles win hands-down over liquid fuel tanks (no more having to pump the darn thing all the time). The bottles are cheap and with normal use, last through a three-meal day, no problem! I usually get a meal or two the next day, since lunches are typically cold... sandwiches, salads, etc. Most of the time we are away from the camp site at lunch time anyway. I always bring a 'bottle-a-day plus one' to be on the safe side and usually bring a bottle or two home for the next trip (depending on the length of the outting and how much cooking). I can usually find the bottles on sale through the year for just over a buck in the 'big' department stores and load up on them. As far as I can tell, the claim of an even, continuous gas flow is true (high or low)... just like using a gas range at home. Clean up is easy and the grease trap underneath the unit catches all that fat dripping from those New York strip steaks. Two or three strip steaks will fill that grease trap reservoir to the brim, so don't forget to empty it before grilling again. The long grill burner also heats that 10 or 12 inch fry pan across the bottom quickly for bacon, eggs, etc. The grill itself will take some scrubbing when you get home if you have been grilling steaks.

If you're looking to replace that old liquid fuel stove, do yourself a favor and get this unit, you won't be sorry.

The grill (or at least the one I have) seems to only be adjustable in a small range right near the turn off point for the propane. Beyond that it just stays at full for probably 7/8 of the dial. With a fine touch you can get it to the flame level you desire though.

I was a little hesitant to buy this grill, but I was proven wrong. This is grill is great. I made hamburgers and was dreading the clean-up and boy was I suprised at how easy it was to clean. I just wiped the bottom out with paper towel and that was it. The grill cooks evenly and quickly. I am so excited to go camping next year.

My husband and I bought this stove at Target last year and we love it! We use it all time whether we are camping, or just at home. I love the large grilling area. The other day I was able to grill 8 kabobs all at once. It is easy to clean and easy to start up. My only complaint would be that it takes practice to adjust the intensity of the heat, but once you master that, there is no problem. I would recommend this product to anyone!

I've had this grill for several years now (I bought it when Coleman was still making it in the red color,) and absolutely love it. My family is small (2 adults, 1 child,) so the small grilling surface size has not been a problem for us. We've cooked steaks, burgers, hot dogs, sausages, and fish on it. All were cooked in a reasonable amount of time. Now that the grill is older, my instastart isn't quite as instant as it was in the beginning, but I'm still satisfied that it works as it should. 90% of the time it requires only one button press to ignite. Boiling water will take you a little extra time (this is not a JetBoil, afterall,) but keeping the wind screens up and cooking all the food at once seems to help. I bought the griddle that goes with it so we can also make pancakes, french toast, and eggs. One reviewer commented on the difficulty of making low adjustments to the flame without shutting the grill off entirely. It is tricky at first, but with a light touch and a little patience you can learn where the "sweet spot" is on the dials for low flame. The propane connector fits nicely under the grill for storage and clean up is no different than any other portable grill. By the end our camping trips, it's usually quite sloppy and ready for a good cleaning at home. I like the under-the-unit grease catcher; that helps to keep home clean up a little less messy. Overall, this has been a great addition to our camping trips. We recently upgraded from a tent to a popup and I wondered if I would need my little grill with all the extras that came with my new pup. I'm so glad I didn't leave it behind on our first trip this season. A camp stove inside a pup is a nice luxury on a rainy day, but nothing beats grilling and cooking outside under the trees. This little grill/stove is a winner.

We bought ours in June 2007 and took it on a 103-day cross country motorcycle trip towing a pop-up tent trailer. We bought it because it was compact and fit nicely into the camper's storage area and because it was a barbecue and stove in one unit, so we were able to make a large variety of meals. We cooked on it every day and it never let us down. The parts stow neatly inside the grill when closed. We put aluminum foil on the bottom to keep it clean. You don't need the sides when it is set on a picnic or portable camping table. We always used both sides to support the lid and as a windbreak. We used the stove many times after returning from our big trip. We now have a travel trailer and use the Coleman as our outdoor barbecue. Still cooking up great steaks! - Camping - Camping Stoves - Grill - Camping Stove

High Power Led - tactical flashlight, camping

You should always have a good flashlight in your car left alone except for emergencies. This is a great flashlight for that purpose. This flashlight is excellent, very small and compact in size, very well made, and very bright. This flashlight was designed for maximum power output at the cost of a shorter battery life of about three to four hours. You would be very impressed by the brightness of this flashlight. The tactical switch is nice feature. Yes there are many good flashlights out there, but you won't go wrong with this one. I highly recommend. Shop around for best price.

I got rid of my Lithiumm battery flashlight,it was costing me to much to replace them. With AAA size battery it was inexpensive.Dorcy Flashlight is also durable,I drop it on my basement floor and no damage to it,especially the Cree light. Its reliable, small,AAA size battery cost less then a lithium battery. The Cree light (200 lumen) is ver bright.I got two,one for each car.I am planning of ordering a third one for me to carry, when I am taking a walk around the park, along with my sword cane. Thanks for a great product.

This is one incredible flashlight. The light output is really bright! I bought this flashlight for camping in July at Yosemite where it's pitch black at night. This is also good for blackouts at home or anywhere you need a one. I bought flashlights with less lumens at a higher price. Using AAA batteries is an A+ since it's readily available if it needs replacement. Turning it on is unusual... twisting the end cap all the way for constant light and loosen it a bit for intermittent lighting and pressing the end button. I'm very satisfied with my purchase. Highly recommended.

the dorcy light is a good strong flashlight i do wish it had a regular push button switch for on off instead of just turning the end cap. also the run time could be longer than 3 hours ?? overall it is a good light.

Great feel, weight, etc. Quality made, not junk. Light is clean, perfect pinpoint and flood in one. Brightness? Don't turn in on in a dark car, even if you point it at the floor and are looking away... this bugger is bright! Battery life is excellent, no noticeable dimming throughout. And fuel.... 3 AAA batteries. I love this light. Highly recommended.

I got this Dorcy light specifically looking for a tactical light. Everything about it is perfect. The size is just right - it's small. It fits very comfortably in my hand - I have medium sized hand. The head in the pic appears larger than it really is. The tactical switch works GREAT - pressing it on/off with the pad of your thumb creates NO NOISE from the switch - just what you expect and need from a tactical light. And, of course, you need bright light in the general area of focus and this thing puts out 10000 watts!! allowing me to see everything clearly in the line-of-sight and general area. Awesome light, awesome price. You will not be dissapointed. - Tactical Flashlight - Camping - Farmer - Flashlight

Multi-tool - multitool, gerber

I am in the Army and currently serving in Iraq. Being here I have received several different models of multi-tools by manufacturers such as SOG, Leatherman, Kershaw, and Gerber. This particular Gerber is by far my favorite and the only one that I brought from home. It contains the tools that I need most, and is at a size that I find comfortable to wear on my belt and it's being there does not interfere with the fit of my body armor or other equipment. I'm amazed at how often the scissors come in handy too. I thought that a goofy thing to have until I got this tool, and now I cannot imagine not having them handy. The pliers are just the right size for most jobs, and the cutters are just fine for cutting the bands off of equipment when needed. For my money Gerber has a winner here and if I ever lose this one I will replace it with the same model. Gerber 05500 MP400 Compact Sport Multi-function Tool

The Gerber MP400 is a great tool... and it's just that... a tool! It's small/compact which you can take everywhere. It's great for occasional use as well as moderate everyday use. If you're looking for something for heavy use, get a regular tool box. For a multi-tool in the $20-$30 range it's economical and gets the job done.

Pro's - it's one hand opening of the pliers is nice and the locking feature for all the other tools is a must have, especially the blade. The grip design allows you to grip down hard without hurting your hand unlike some of the other flip over multi-tools like the Leatherman's.

Con's - the tool can be a bit more sturdy. It has some flex in the design especially when turning a tight screw. The material used to manufacture the tool is a bit soft. The pliers are manufactured with such precision that you need to oil it occassionally. Thank goodness for WD-40!

Option - the included Gerber sheath is a belt-loop design. I recommend one from Ripoffs (Model CO-12 or CO-13). Its clip-on design makes it easy to get on and off your belt (without pulling down your pants).

Conclusion - if you want a tool with all the features to get you through your day, you will not be disappointed with the MP400. If you're looking for the Rolls-Royce of multi-tools, this is not it. This is the Chevy pickup with the rust spots still driving down the street.

The Gerber Compact sport is one of the best knives I have ever used from the one-hand opening to the locking blades. With the flick on your wrist, you are ready to do anything. The advantage between this and Lethermen is that you don't have to dig for your pliers. The Gerber knife is also good if you have kids because they can't get into it. With the pliers in the handles, it is next to impossable to open. The disagvantages Gerber are the price, and it is harder to get to the tools in your knife.

I have two Gerber 400's, one with the tool kit. They are superb examples of size efficiency. The knives hold an edge better than most such tools. As such, they are HARDER steel than some other brands. Hard, thin steel do not like twisting. Buy a cheap kitchen knife [...] for pumpkins, or use a 'pumpkin saw' (which incidentially will also break if twisted).Other than that, the only advice I would give is to keep the 400's well-oiled. The sliding mechanism can bind- especially if used outdoors- unless you keep it oiled. This is explained in the flyer that comes with the tool.BTW- Gerber will replace broken knife blades.

This is my third one over the past ten years as I have lost the other ones while working. I own and operate a handyman service and this product is indispensible. I have tried other products and they do not compare. It is small, sleek and convenient, especially in tight areas.

Compared to the Swiss Army SwissTool, which I also own, this tool has many drawbacks: It needs oil. The pliers have a lot of friction even when oiled -- they don't swing open easily, I need to use two hands to pull them apart after each motion. The scissors are really tiny, almost bizarrely so. It's kind of ugly. No ruler, even though there's space for one. The can opener doesn't retract well, so it exposes you to a sharp edge whenever you are using the pliers -- a really poor bit of design.

There are some real positives too. The tools are the right size, and the screwdrivers seem exceptionally solid. The half-serrated blade is a feature some people will like, and it's fairly (not exceptionally) sharp. The non-glare matte finish may please some people, and makes the tool easy to hold firmly. The plier tips are strong and precisely machined, suitable for both fine and medium-sized work.

If the price is low (I paid twenty), it's a decent purchase. But it's certainly NOT the best multi-tool available.

This is a sweet multitool, the only disadvantage of which is it needs regular lubrication for the one-handed opening to work really easily. It would also be nice to have a ruler engraved on the side like other models.

The selection of blades is decent; as another reviewer noted, the scissors turn out to be really helpful. I also like the wire-snips for cutting small cable-ties and those annoying plastic tags that retailers put into sweaters.

A quality product with no great drawbacks. - Multitool - Gerber - Knife - Camping

Knife Sharpener - knife sharpeners, camping

I have owned a portable knife sharpener for my hiking and camping trips for many years now. Unless I am missing another model along the way somewhere, this Smith sharpener was at the time I bought mine and still seems to be the cheapest way to have a portable sharpener along on any camping trip, hunting excursion, etc. Though some of the other reviewers here seem to regard this little baby as a stay at home unit for sharpening kitchen knives and what not, I strictly use it as a portable pocket style sharpener for taking on the road or trail. Its a little lacking for a home system, and there are much better choices to be had for that purpose. That are also more money as well.

The Smith two step system has been a most valuable part of my camping gear for a couple years now. It is easy to carry along in a backpack, simplicity in itself to use, and does a very nice job of putting a decent edge on just about any knife you may have along in the wilderness. One doesn't really have to explain the good sense and value of having a knife along on a hiking trip. Its uses as a tool and for self defense is common sense on its fundamental level. However I am often surprised at how many times I run into other hikers and campers who have enough good knives along, but no sharpener for them at all. Its like they seem to forget that a knife can get just as dull at a campsite as it does in your kitchen. On many occasions, even a lot more so. We all know full well what a drag it is using a dull knife no matter what job we are trying to perform. I probably end up loaning out my Smiths as much as I actually use it myself. At around $6.00 at the time of this writing, it is certainly not something that will give your knives a shaving worthy edge, but its ease of use and portability, along with its price make it a solid performer, and, an excellent value. I have had mine for about two years now and it is showing very little loss for the wear to be sure. And I have probably used it several dozen times on everything from jackknifes to small camp axes. I highly recommend it as an essential for your next wilderness excursion. It is an excellent portable sharpener for the price...

It's a knife sharpener. It sharpens knives. It's easy to use. The rubber bottom helps keep it steady. I like it. It stores easily. It's bright yellow. What more can I say?

The sharpening rods are not replaceable. Don't expect it to do miracles if your knife is nicked or gouged or bent. Don't use it with serrated edges. Don't use it on one-sided Japanese knives. Get and use a good cutting board.

I was very impressed by this sharpener. I tested it out on my pocket knife, which was a bit shy of sharp. After a couple of strokes on the fine sharpener the edge was restored to a faily good edge. I cut paper with out tearing it.

There are ways to get a sharper edge but not for the money. Don't hesitate to purchase this. It also brought a sharp edge to all my kitchen knifes. I tried to sharpen a serated knife and it did not sharpen it as I had hoped.

PROS

This will sharpen most knifes quickley and easily. It's light wieght and small enough to be portable.

CONS

The only negative thing I can say about this sharpener is I wish it were smaller. I would prefer something a bit smaller to throw in my backpack. For home use, this is not an issue. Doesn't work on filet knifes and may not work on some serated knifes.

First of All, don't put your expectations too high for this $5 sharpener. I bought mine at walmart for $5 and it has no complaints. I have used it on numerous knives ranging from small swiss army knives which got sharper in just a few strokes to 11.5'' Bowie knives which took much more time but the result was pleasing. Absolutely 5 stars! Course and fine side, both work well! Don't put to much pressure on the blade as you slide it through however, at the best this will do nothing to your knife, worst result is that it will chip your knife. There is enough friction between the steel of the blade and the sharpener. Great Tool All in All! (Would not recommend for kitchen knives) Seems to be less affective on bigger knives but still gives pleasant result over time

This little sharpener is great - I bought it to sharpen my Smith and Wesson knife that I carry as part of my equipment / tools and it worked great! The premise of this thing is that you first draw your knife across the tungsten carbide blades (labeled as coarse); what this does is that it actually removes a small amount of surface material and reshapes it into a sharp form - this worked great because my dull blade had all kinds of knicks and this got rid of them. Secondly, you draw your blade across the ceramic rods (labled as fine); what this does is that it softens and refines the sharp surface and removes some of the burrs from the resurfacing. What your left with is a razor-sharp surface. Is it a flawless surface? No. Is it professional grade sharpening that is on par with the best stone sharpening? No. But what it is, is a simple, effective way to sharpen thicker, straight blades like those of a pocket / duty knife. I don't have time to be running out to a cutlery or breaking out the stone to put an edge on my poor "beater" knife. This sharpener I can carry in my gear and whip it out when the edge is looking poor - in a few strokes, its back in great cutting condition. I highly recommend this for straight edged pocket knives, for serrated there is another one that comes with a rod for sharpening the little contures of the serration. This is no good for thin and single-sided blades. If the blade is too thin, this looks like it may warp or damage it. If the sharpness is on the face, and other side of the blade is flat, this will not work. - Knife Sharpeners - Camping - Knife Sharpner - Sharpener - Sharpeners - Sharpening Tools
